I was cleaning out emails last night and found one on the spirituality of men. The Sacred Masculine has been an under-current, recurring thread, running alongside my work with the Sacred Feminine, the spirituality of women, the goddess, and feminine theology. As women are uncovering the Sacred Feminine, awakening their inner goddess, finding their wholeness and deepening, there are shifts in spiritual understanding affecting men, too.
I call it a new spirituality of men because these males are exploring where traditional spirituality of men hasn’t commonly gone before…like awareness and safeguarding the spirit and emotions and sensitivities of boys and young men; exploring the Divine Feminine and the goddess and the missing Mother God and her impact on everything about men and their relationship with all things female and feminine; and the way of the Peaceful Warrior, deepening and broadening their understanding and acceptance of spiritual gifts and revisiting images and the role of the Sacred Masculine.
Some new spirituality of men resources that have come to my attention:
Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys
Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men
The Savage Breast: One Man’s Search for the Goddess
The Peaceful Warrior Movie
Matthew Fox has one, too, The Hidden Spirituality of Men.
Question…
Do guys talk to each other about this stuff? I hope so. Or maybe that’s where friends who are women, other sensitive guy friends, and spiritual muses like me come in. All I know is that there is a lot happening, spiritually and emotionally, inside our guys. Good things. And talking about it helps sort it out… There are some really good guys around.
As much as I hold space for women to explore the contemporary spirituality of women and girls, I hope there is something like that for guys, too.
If you know of one, share.
If you’d like to start one, share that too. Thank you! – Anne
